Well, I didn’t really meet Kevin Bacon. But I did make the bagel he ate when he stopped by the bagel bakery in Northampton. He was in town to play a gig with his brother.

Billy Collins came to BC and read some poems in Gasson Hall. I think he was poet laureate at the time. Anyway, the place was pretty packed. Like everyone else, I got in line afterwards and he signed a book. For some reason it was very awkward. The whole deal of getting books signed by authors is awkward, I suppose, not that that’s ever stopped me.

I met Zadie Smith at a book reading when White Teeth was just becoming popular. The reading was in a small bookstore in some small town in Connecticut—I forget where—and only about a dozen people came. She was jetlagged but very pleasant.
